SWINE FLU: TIPS TO AVOID EXPOSURE AND MINIMIZE RISKS

In view of the national attention to the Swine Flu outbreak and to assure you that there are ways and means to avoid exposure, be aware of the following tips. While we’ve not been affected in SLO County yet, there are three schools closing in Oxnard – let’s be careful and safe. At the first sign of symptoms – do take appropriate action, see a doctor.

How To Protect Employees

Protection depends on emphasis on proper hygiene (disinfecting hands and surfaces) and practicing “social distancing”.

§  Social distancing means reducing the frequency, proximity, and duration of contact between people (both employees and customers) to reduce the chances of spreading pandemic influenza from person-to-person. All employees should practice good hygiene and keep work surfaces clean and sanitary.

§  Utilize our resources and focus on maintain a clean work environment. For example:

§  Use tissues

§  Empty trash cans

§  Use hand soap; wash hands often

§  Use hand sanitizer

§  Use disinfectants

§  Use disposable towels to clean work surfaces.

·         Consider checking with your doctor for a seasonal influenza vaccine (this helps to prevent illness from seasonal influenza strains that may continue to circulate).

·         Remember to use common sense about protective behaviors; for example, cough etiquette and care of personal protective equipment.

Controlling exposure by doing the following:

·         stay at home if ill, without fear of any reprisals.

·         Consider minimizing face-to-face contact when appropriate by using e-mail, websites and teleconferences.

·         Always call HR if you have a question or concern.

Personal Protective Equipment (PPE): It is important that personal protective equipment be sanitized as appropriate to its use.

·         More frequent sanitization might be warranted now.

·         Properly remove and dispose as appropriate, to avoid contamination of self, others or the environment

The Net Sells Presentation Possibilities

I'm starting to think about presentations for our group, and would
love to hear your thoughts about some ideas. I'm hoping to use the
time to give you something you can use (if you have a website), so
your reactions will help me in choosing material.

1. SEO Do It Yourself Basics: This one is taken from a module I do
for MCSC a couple times a year to help budding entrepreneurs get their
websites set up to be search engine friendly and maybe even
competitively visible. The focus is on basic website structure and on
page content, with a few suggestions for free tools you can use. If
you do not program your own site, you may need some webmaster help to
do a few of these things, but the content changes are usually things
you really can do yourself.

2. Local Search: Even if you don't have a website, your local
business can be visible online, and it should be. Changing search
technology is making it more important for local businesses to get
involved and stay involved in their online profiles. Many of you
probably have a Google Local listing, but there are lots of other
places to get local visibility. Includes a few best practices tips
for getting and maintaining local listings (not as easy as it seems it
would be).

3. Why Twitter, Why Now? This one is a little of the vision thing,
but I think it's useful to stay on top of trends just so you'll
understand how the Internet is evolving. And nothing is evolving
faster these days than Twitter. Intro to Twitter and how to use it
basics, plus a few thoughts on how it might help to promote your
business. (yes, I do have a Twitter account, but no, I am not at all
active in maintaining it -- that doesn't change my belief it is a
disruptive technology -- I think this could be a game changer)

Do these sound good/make sense for you? Are they all wildly off the
mark? Ideas to add to any/all of them? Especially, let me know which
one you rank #1. Thanks!

Whizbang Acquires 2point Media

“We are so excited about expanding our agency’s services for our clients - from advertising, design and web to full service branding including vital marketing tools such as social media and public relations. We’ve been talking to the owner of 2 Point Media, Starr Hall, for close to a year now about forming a partnership or alliance of some sort, since we are both local companies who work on a national level. With Starr leaving on her worldwide promotional tour, the time was right for us to acquire 2 Point Media,” said Ellen Curtis, owner of Whizbang. “We are excited to have Starr Hall as our new public relations and social networking consultant and to bring in her processes, which have led to her great success. She is a local entrepreneur that leveraged herself to a worldwide platform through her own public relations efforts.”

Hall started 2 Point Media in 2005 and by the following year, the agency had close to 70 clients worldwide. Her ongoing success and connections led her to a career in public speaking and training, as well as a national columnist for several magazines including CCM, a radio show and television show set to air in 2010. Hall will be spending the majority of 2009 traveling, training businesses on ePR and social networking and promoting her latest book release from Entrepreneur Press - Get Connected: The Social Networking Toolkit for Business.

“I wanted to make sure that my clients at 2 Point Media will still have superb public relations and branding services. I knew that Whizbang was the agency to make this happen,” said Hall. “Whizbang has the expertise, proven strategies and big pictured thinking that 2 Point Media clients need and expect. I love the energy of the team and commitment they bring to their clients.”

Acquiring 2 Point Media is one of many changes made by Whizbang due to the ever changing business marketing climate. “We saw a huge shift in advertising from offline to online media and we wanted to be at the forefront of that movement. So three years ago we changed our name from “Advertise Here” to “Whizbang” and started offering website and e-advertising to our clients. Acquiring 2 Point Media fits right in with this shift,” said Curtis.

Whizbang owners Frank Scotti and Ellen Curtis both come from large international advertising agencies and have experience launching successful campaigns for the most recognized brands in the world, including McDonalds, Coca Cola, Morgan Stanley and Delta Air Lines. They moved back to San Luis Obispo and started Whizbang, to be closer to family when they began having children. They have been in business for over six years in San Luis Obispo and have clients on both a local and national level.

Lower Your Unemployment Costs

Next Thursday, the 9th, Betsey will guest host the Dave Congalton Show on KVEC 920 News Talk. Her guest at 5pm is Ed Laski, CEO of Corporation Counseling Services, a company that helps employers lower their unemployment costs. We'll talk strategies & tell great stories (like the ee who filed for unemployment because he said he was in “over my head”). Most ers know the basics – the ee cannot collect if they voluntarily quit or were fired for good cause. But there are lots of grey areas that can be confusing. We’ll also provide news about tax incentives already in place for local businesses.

Labor Commissioner is Making Surprise Inspections In Lodi

A word to the wise, from Betsey:

The Division of Labor Standards Enforcement (DLSE), also known as the Labor Commissioner, is conducting surprise inspections in the Lodi District Grape Growers area.

The Labor Commissioner has the authority to investigate employee complaints and claims.  Once a complaint or claim is filed, the Bureau of Field Enforcement (BOFE) has free access to all places of labor. It is a misdemeanor to refuse them admission or willfully fail to furnish requested records or other information.

These officials may issue subpoenas to compel the attendance of parties and witnesses and the production of books, papers and records. They may administer oaths, examine witnesses under oath, and take depositions.  You may be given a notice to appear for an informal conference before a Deputy Labor Commissioner.

Remember, just because someone from the Labor Commissioner's office shows up with a subpoena, does not mean they can take records that day.  Also, employees have the right to refuse to speak with agency inspectors.
